Arete is a startup whose founders had firsthand experience with the pressures and challenges young athletes are faced at the beginning of their careers. As a result, they reached out to us to design an app that would act as a personal well-being coach who will contribute to athletes’ performance and help them build a mindset that wins matches and games.
Empowering a happier generation of athletes
In professional sports, physical fitness is in focus, while the mental part of being a pro athlete often gets overlooked, especially in the youth sector. Arete is on a mission to change that with specific mental exercises for the young athletic mind. The app's backbone is a group of professionals working in health and education—sports psychologists and coaches—who know that the key to excellent athletic performance lies in your mental stamina.
Hello, Avatar Me
The app is built as a safe space for interaction. For example, instead of uploading a photo, you make an avatar of yourself while signing up. Built into the app is an AI-powered chatbot that talks to you the entire time while you choose your hair color and jersey. Besides just chatting, its vital role is to provide support and guide users to various mental exercises and content curated by experienced sports psychology professionals.
To align with the current trend in sports apps, we made the app with the dark mode in mind and used a combination of colors from a small color palette with a touch of neon fluorescents. In addition, by adding gamification elements, the app becomes a personal well-being hub.
“It was a great pleasure to be part of the team behind this project, designing Arete and helping as many talented young athletes keep their heads in the game and thrive. Their success is our success.”
The UX behind the habit of practice
The app establishes a system of achievement and reward with a series of interactive tasks while being a well-being tracker at the same time. The goal was to help kids develop a routine and stay encouraged to do more by sharing their stats and wellness tracker with their coaches or parents.
Also, whenever an athlete performs a task, picks up a new habit, or completes a Challenge routine with Arete, they win. Not just mental strength but also experience points. They help them stay motivated by leveling up and getting fancy badges.
